The HikerJamz Geocaching Talk Show: May 11th, 2014

Discover Podcasting Internet Radio with hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show on BlogTalkRadio

Notes: Due to a major problem in Studio 1 during the live show on Saturday, May 10th, this is an edited show posted Sunday May 11th. It is considered episode 60.5 of the show, and is about 35 minutes long.

After this post, there will be no posts to this blog for a period expected to be "a couple weeks". In our one your anniversary post, we threatened to move from the Blogger.com blogging platform to Wordpress, and we're going to pull the trigger on that. At some point during that period, this blog will only be reachable at http://opencachingna.blogspot.com and http://blog.opencaching.us won't work. We will announce that change at all our social media outlets. However, the wordpress blog will return at blog.opencaching.us.

Hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show is a proud member of the Tech Podcasts Network. We have a new episode every Saturday at 3:00 pm. Eastern (New York) time here on Blog Talk Radio. We will discuss news, events, different types of caching tips and tricks and from time to time we will have a special guest visit our show. Hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show is sponsored by CacheFace.com which is a dedicated social network for geocachers to connect and share in their caching passion globally and in real time. All Geocachers are welcome to join for free. To learn more about Geocaching, go to geocaching.com/guide and find the Q&A's on what geocaching is all about. An interview with Geocaching Vlogger The Ginger Geocacher

Our old friend HikerJamz alerted us last week to a relatively new face on the Geocaching scene who might be interested in being interviewed for this blog; Amber, who goes by the handle The Ginger Geocacher. We quickly contacted her, and yes, she was happy to agree to an interview with us. She joined Geocaching.com in early January, where her username is thegingergeoacher (all one word). She is also on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and of course has her own YouTube channel. Above, you see embedded what is, at the time of this post, her latest video, "It happens to the best of us Geocaching", when she went out Geocaching on the Birthday of the hobby (May 3rd). We are also embedding another one of her videos at the bottom of the post. On with the interview!

Geocaching (NOT) taking a beating in from Government Officials in North Carolina (part 3 of 3) guest commentary by DeBaere

Courtesy of Julian March/Star News Media www.StarNewsOnline.com

Above is Lodge Road on The Holly Shelter Game Land, about 15 miles NNE of Wilmington, North Carolina. There are about 600 Geocaching.com listed caches on The HSGL, The Bling Shelter Power Run (link to first cache in the series), which is generally considered a roadside power trail (over half of them on the road above). Game Lands are used primarily for hunting of course, and are administered by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commision. On April 19th, an article came out in the Jacksonville Daily News alleging that "Geocaching draws the scrutiny of state officials" for caching on that State gamelands, as found here on the web. Not really a bad article, and a founding member and current board member of the North Carolina Geocaching Organization was interviewed. But one cannot deny the negative connotations of the attention grabbing headline! Geocaching is under scrutiny? Why? Who told the reporter that? We noticed commentary on this article by well known North Carolina based Geocacher DeBaere (Dave DeBaeremaeker) on Google+, and asked if he would let us post it here as "guest commentary", to which he graciously agreed. Read the article first of course, and then his excellent opinion piece below.

Geocaching taking a beating from Government Officials and the media as of late! (Part 2 of 3)

Here we see the Badlands of Central Oregon. They don't look so bad, do they? But they are now bad for Geocaching! They are on Bureau of Land Management (hereafter referred to as BLM) land, and more specifically, a designated wilderness area within BLM land. The local district manager is asking that 47 Geocaches be permanently removed, and another 37 closed seasonally (a total of 84 caches), in areas on BLM land deemed inappropriate for Geocaching. The caches are being removed from the Badlands, Spring Basin and Lower White River designated wilderness areas, as well as land on nearby Horse Ridge and other lands deemed inappropriate for caching. Along with designated wilderness areas, these BLM lands have titles such as “research natural areas” and “areas of critical environmental concern.” This story received widespread coverage in the media, one of the most covered Geocaching related news stories we've ever seen. Why is that? Read on!

The HikerJamz Geocaching Talk Show: April 26th, 2014

Current Podcasting Podcasts at Blog Talk Radio with hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show on BlogTalkRadio

OCNA blog note: Please note that HikerJamz is having a contest! But you'll have to listen to see how to enter. You might want to brush up on your early Geocaching history though. This week, HikerJamz and co-host Ken spend quite a bit of time talking about the archival of over 4,000 caches in Arizona, that we blogged about last week. Ken is from Arizona, and did have one cache archived.

Hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show is a proud member of the Tech Podcasts Network. Today we will explain how to win a set of " 10" Travelfleas from Travelfreas.com...Listen to a new episode every Saturday at 3:00 pm. Eastern (New York) time here on Blog Talk Radio. Geocaching taking a beating from Government Officials and the media as of late! (Part 1 of 3)

File this post under current events in Geocaching. We highly recommend all Geocachers subscribe to a Google news alert for the word Geocaching. Or alternatively, you can come read this blog, and look at the RSS feed we have of the 5 latest Geocaching news stories on the internet in the sidebar. Two "negative" stories came out this week, one regarding the mass removal of caches on BLM land in Oregon, and another with a negative headline about Geocaching and North Carolina State Gamelands, although the article itself is quite balanced and generally favorable towards Geocaching. But there is a 3rd "negative story" this week, that didn't show up on a Google news alert (yet), and  it's a big one. Here you see a parcel map of the State of Arizona. Everything shown in blue (light or dark) is State Trust Land. Although it's been said for years Geocaching is not an authorized recreational activity on these lands, State officials have apparently taken it to the next level. This week, Geocachng.com HQ archived over 4,400 caches on State Trust Land property. We do have an explanation from The Arizona Assistant Director of Natural Resources Division (via an email an Arizona Cacher received from them, and has given us permission to post and/or quote from). Originally intended to be one post touching on all three news stories, we've decided to cover all three of individually, beginning with the situation in Arizona.

OCNA Blog note: We were just going to skip a weekly video posted by The Geocaching Doc while our Blogger was on vacation, but it turned out to be one of The Doc's highly popular videos where he shows viewers how to fabricate a unique and interesting container, so we are posting his Puzzle Box Geocache video, where he shows how he made the Cache which won first prize at a local to him Makers Madness event (was originally posted to YouTube April 15th, 2014), as well as his latest video, GEOCACHING with Barney Fife, published the same day as this post.

Webcam Caches; how they work, and a history

OCNA Webcam Cache at Towson University, Md.
The OCNA blogger is going on vacation next week (by the way, there will be a guest post!), and was planning to hit up a Webcam Cache listed on our site near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Collingswood Webcam Cache. So keeping with the recent tradition on this blog of featuring a Locationless and Moving  Cache, along with talking about how these caches work and a history of them, we will do the same this week with Webcam Caches, and also describe the three different types of outdoor public web camera's that are used for Webcam Caches. As well as plug the fact that we still accept them on our website, as do fellow alternative Gecoaching websites Navicache.com, Terracaching.com and GPSgames.org. You can submit a Webcam cache on any of our sites right now! We list 33 active, 31 in the Untied States, and 2 in Canada, on the OpenCaching.us website. We have published over 40 of them. Approximately 95% of Geocaching.com accounts registered after they stopped accepting these caches in November, 2005, and therefore were never able to have a chance to create one. They are disappearing fast on that website, and very few are left. We have the numbers there, both in the USA, and worldwide, but you'll have to read on for that.

OCNA Pathtag winners announced!

We have the winners of our 2nd Pathtag contest, which was billed as "Win some OCNA Pathtags part Deux". All winners responded within about 3 hours of being notified via email on Monday morning, March 31st. It looks like we forgot to mention when announcing the winners of our last contest that beginning with that contest (The Travel Fleas Holiday Giveaway), we started using the website Random.org to choose the winner(s). We were inspired to do so by The Outdoor Blogger Network, which we are a member of, after noticing one of their very well done contests to win one of 5 pairs of hiking boots to review on your blog (obviously, we didn't win!). Rebecca from The OBN actually makes videos of her prize drawings, but we're not that advanced (yet). Watch the video, or above you see a screenshot of the website. You put in a Min. number (and our Google Docs entry forms start at 2), with a Max. of the number of the last entry on the form, and you simply hit "Generate".

Our Grand Prize winner, of five of our Pathtags was Mark AKA themulcher, a Geocacher from Charlotte, North Carolina. The 2nd prize winner, of three Pathtags, was Ed AKA bmzdaddy, a Geocacher from Chesterfield, Missouri. The 3rd prize winner, of two Pathtags was Andy, whose children (ages 7 and 10) cache as g00fballz. They are from Prince George, British Columbia. Hey, our first international winner! Congratulations to all three of them!! Thanks to all who entered the contest as well.

(The GCDoc Video) Best LPC GEOCACHE!

OCNA Blog note: Wait! The Doc can explain! You'll have to watch the video. And late in the video, there is an announcement regarding an upcoming event, and friends of OCNA. Be sure to check it out!

Published on Mar 26, 2014
LPC [el-pee-see] - noun
A very common hiding place for micro geocaches. Oftentimes used as derogatory reference, since LPC hides are generally all the same and require little skill or imagination.

Sporadically Featured OCNA Cache: The Infiltrator

Our latest Sporadically featured OCNA Cache is a Moving Cache, The Infiltrator, owned by OCNA username Termite Hunter from the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Whom, by the way, is the first person ever to have two of their caches sporadically featured on this blog! As of the date of this Blog post, this is also the most found cache on our website, although it hasn't always been, and may not always be. We accept moving caches on our website, and always have during our 3 1/2 year existence. So too do all our fellow alternative Geocaching websites. Best we can tell, Geocaching.com stopped accepting them in mid-2003, although there are exceptions, and later ones that "slipped through the cracks". In this post, we will talk about how Moving Caches work, the history of Moving Caches, and of course we will have some commentary from Termite Hunter on this Moving Cache. We will also tell the amazing story of The Infiltrator being "muggled", and later returned to it's hiding spot by that same Muggle, as the OCNA blogger was personally involved in that situation!

Win some OpenCaching North America Pathtags part Deux!

Pathtag Blueprint
The OpenCaching North America Pathtag, 1st Edition, is currently sold out, and no longer available for purchase to the general public from TheGeocoinStore.com. We could order an owner refill in the future, but they will most likely be retired, with a total of 500 having been produced.  However, 400 of those were produced for sale to the general public, and the other 100 were in fact an owner refill. That refill order recently arrived at OCNA HQ, and we're giving away a total of 10 of them, to three different lucky winners in a blog contest now!

Treasure: Finally...a feature film that captures the spirit of geocaching

Treasure is a feature-length micro budget film, in which Geocaching plays an integral role, which currently has an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign. It is a story about Erica, who lives with her widowed father, and has lost her way in life. She gets in trouble for drinking and driving, and is sentenced to community service in a soup kitchen in lieu of jail time. There she meets a volunteer named Ryan, who introduces her to Geocaching. As it says on the Indiegogo page, "she finds more than caches out there in those little boxes!" Geocaching and her new friend Ryan help her to find herself, and get her life back on track. The Indiegogo campaign for this film has already started! It runs from March 3rd, 2014 until April 1st, 2014 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time, and has a goal of $25,000. We contacted the writer and producer of the film, Chris Williamson, an MFA Student at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, who needs to write and direct a feature length film to graduate with his Masters Degree. He was more than happy to agree to be interviewed about the film and it's crowd funding campaign.

Geocaching Podcast, episode 20, released on March 9th, 2014. The interview itself actually happened over two weeks prior; we can only aspire to some day be as far ahead on our interviews as they are! The Oh Beep! podcast is a family friendly Geocaching podcast originating out of Nottingham in The UK, and this weeks show was hosted by Banana Source and his children Cachezilla, and Doctor D. The interview begins right around the 30 minute mark, but we strongly suggest listening to the whole show if you have the time. Seasoned podcast veteran DudleyGrunt does most of the talking, but Mr.Yuck chimes in plenty, and we're very happy with the interview, and we thank Mark very much for having us on. You can find the Oh Beep Geocaching podcast at www.ohbeep.com, and in the top right hand corner of their website are icons where you can follow them on various social media outlets, and listen to, or subscribe to their podcast from multiple sources. You can listen to this particular episode here in the blog post below:

A year of Geocaching blogging (and an announcement)

Sorry for the image, but it was free, and the blogger didn't feel like paying royalties for a better one. We were waiting until the last minute this week to attempt to secure an interview on a breaking news story in the world of Geocaching, but that didn't work out in time for us. So as a replacement, we have our one year of blogging anniversary post, a week early! Yes, this blog was officially launched with it's first post on March 13th, 2013, although it was in the planning stages for several weeks before that. So for our upcoming one year anniversary, we will reveal the 10 most viewed posts, and give a brief overview of our assessment of the first year of the blog. We also have a big announcement regarding this blog; however, it should be a given that the announcement won't occur until well after the following page break....

An interview with the creators of the Geolocation smartphone game Sighter, part II

Last week, in part one of our interview with the creators of the Geolocation game Sighter, we were introduced to Attila Szaló and Krisztián Kusper, and learned a little about the development of the app and the game. Additionally, we learned a little about finding and creating Sights. In the highly anticipated part two, we will get into trails of sites, and a few closing odds and ends. And we do really mean highly anticipated, as part one one of the interview was one of the most viewed new posts on the blog in it's first week of being posted. So read on!

An interview with the creators of the Geolocation smartphone game Sighter

Geolocation game Sighter Logo

Sighter is a geolocation smartphone game for iphone and Android billed as a social, outdoor treasure hunting activity, where you can hide and seek interesting Sights, simply by taking and sharing photos. Think of these photos as virtual Geocaches, or Sights. To find a Sight, just download the app, open it up, and you will see the closest Sights, with their distances and direction displayed, as well as a compass arrow. The goal is to find these sights, and take a photograph of it as proof of your find.

The creators of Sighter were featured on The UK Geocaching Podcast Show #24, November 2013 and on The GeoGearHeads Podcast Episode #106, January 11th, 2014. We here at the OCNA Blog figured we'd contact them to see if they were interested in a print interview, to which they graciously agreed. This is the first part of a two part interview.

Locationless Caches and some fun facts

locationless Geocache

Three weeks ago, we had one of our sporadically featured OpenCaching Network caches, Der Laputische Gruß, a Locationless Cache listed on our sister site Opencaching.de, but with posted coordinates in Washington, D.C. We had planned to do a follow up post on the general topic of Locationless Caches, complete with the OCNA Blogger, Mr. Yuck, going out and finding that cache, and a short video of him rendering the very strange Laputian salute in public. Well, thanks to the coldest and snowiest Winter on record in 25 years or so in the Northeastern U.S., that didn't happen! So here's a replacement picture of him logging the Locationless Cache Timmy Time (Terracaching.com waypoint name LCSY), way back on January 21st, 2007. Although this cache type was banned forever by Geocaching.com in January 2006 (in favor of the not very popular Waymarking.com), we have information on where you can go to still "find" over 1,500 of them, or even create your own for others to enjoy. We also discovered some historical fun facts about this cache type in the course of our research, so read on!

An interview with Geocaching Retailer Drives Cache Closet

Drives Cache Closet trailer

Our OCNA blogger recently became aware of Drives Cache Closet, a Geocaching retailer from Mesquite, Texas (suburban Dallas) owned by David and Anita Rives, via a Google Adsense ad on an internet radio station. Because believe it or not, he has never used any kind of adblocker software, actually likes seeing ads, and is known to visit Geocaching websites. A lot. So we poked around their website, asked them if our website could be listed on one of their many other websites, MyGeocaching.com, and asked if they'd like to be interviewed for a Geocaching blog. David was happy to answer some questions for us.
