Law enforcement officials express concern over Geocaching (Allegedly)

Albuquerque, New Mexico Geocaching

We have not made any sort of announcement, but here at the OCNA blog, we have resolved to post more "Geocaching in the news" content in 2014. Considering the very popular Geocaching blog that normally covers current events (Notaboutthenumbers.com) hasn't been posted to in 4 months, save for a single guest blog post in November. No, we have no idea what's going on over there either. Unfortunately however, we're going to have to ring in 2014 with an absolutely preposterous negative news story on our hobby.

The Oh Beep! Geocaching Podcast interviews HikerJamz

The OH BEEP! Geocaching podcast is a relatively new entry into the Geocaching podcastosphere, having had it's debut on November 9th, 2013. This family friendly Geocaching podcast originates from The UK, and can have as many as four hosts (all from the same Family). Check out their well done website for the show at www.ohbeep.com. The show we are embedding into this post with the HikerJamz interview was the 9th episode, and is hosted by Benign Source (Father) and Doctor D (Son). This episode consists of about a 30 minute segment of their regular weekly show, and about a 34 minute interview with HikerJamz. Be sure to listen to the whole show, it's very entertaining. We obviously have permission to post it here. And we're terrible at keeping secrets, we will be interviewing the OH BEEP! Geocaching Podcast here on the blog in the near future. :-)

Caching up with The Cache Me If You Can! Geoaching Board Game

Cache Me if you can board game

The OCNA blog is about 9 months old now, and we have conducted several interviews; 22, to be exact. Many of those interviewees provide a Geocaching related product or service,  and it didn't take us long to realize that many of them are often developing new products or services, or making "improvements" to existing ones. This is certainly the case with Dan Hundycz, President of DPH Games, maker of The Cache Me If You Can! Geocaching board game. The game was featured in a June 2013 post on this blog. We noticed via ads run on Geocaching.com that the Zombie Apocalypse expansion pack (also known as Zombie Apocalypse Geocaching, or ZAG) was released October 25th, 2013 (just in time for Halloween). We noticed as well that DPH games has greatly increased their visibility, with 14 vendors now selling the game. So we decided to "Cache up" with Dan.

An interview with Geocaching Vlogger GeoPaul (Part 2)

In Part 1 of our interview with Geocaching Vlogger GeoPaul, we mentioned that he had recently won a highly prestigious award from a MAJOR Geocaching website. That award was Geocacher of the Month, for August 2013, as awarded by The Geocaching Blog, the official Blog of Geocaching.com. How that works, in case any readers are not familiar with the process, is that there are 3 nominees every month, nominated by readers of that blog, their peers in the community. Voting is then open, usually for 2 weeks, via comments to the blog post introducing the 3 nominees, and a panel from Geocaching HQ decides the winner. Generally, The Geocaching Blog has been naming the nominees the first few days after the Month in question, and naming the GOTM the 3rd week after the month in question. This blog certainly knows what it's like to be behind on blogging! We now continue our interview with GeoPaul.

An interview with Geocaching Vlogger GeoPaul (Part 1)

We here at the OCNA blog have done a tribute post to the late Steve Love, AKA Sven, and we of course post the weekly content of The GCDoc as guest posts on the blog. The Doc is a member of The Geocaching Network on YouTube, which has currently has 31 members, although I wouldn't describe them all has highly active Vloggers, or all with 100% Geocaching content. We at the blog were first made aware of GeoPaul, another member of the network, from The UK, via him making himself known on Twitter via The Geocaching Twittersphere, even before he joined The Geocaching network. And he most certainly is a prolific Vlogger, with 100% Geocaching related content. Check out his entire YouTube channel here.

Sporadically featured OCNA Cache: Mt. Elbert Summit

The highest peak in the picture above is Mt. Elbert, located in the San Isablel National Forest, in Lake County, Colorado. Rising to 14,433 feet above sea level, it is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains, the 2nd highest peak in the 48 contiguous United States (after Mt. Whitney in California, which is less than 100 feet higher), and the 14th highest peak overall in the United States. Obviously, it is also the highpoint of the State of Colorado. Hiking to it's summit, although very strenuous, and involving a minimum 4,000 foot elevation gain, does not require any special mountaineering or rock climbing skills. Reaching the summit also happens to be a virtual cache on our website, Mt. Elbert Summit, and is our latest Sporadically featured OCNA cache on the blog.

The OKAPI Project: The OpenCaching API

We at OpenCaching North America like to promote the fact that there are several Smartphone Geocaching apps compatible with our website (as well as several of the other OpenCaching nodes, as they're called). We owe this to OKAPI, the OpenCaching API, and of course to the independent European developers who have written these applications. You can always access the list of currently compatible phone apps from any page on our website, at the link www.opencaching.us/articles.php?page=apps. Not a very fancy webpage, but it gets the job done.

    The Space Coast Geocaching Store

The Space Coast Geocaching Store is located at 860 North Banana River Drive, in Merritt Island, Florida, and is owned by Dale and Barb Swinehart. It was the first brick and mortar Geocaching store in the United States. You can also buy many of their items online from their website at http://shop.spacecoastgeocachers.com/ (or alternatively, you can click on their banner above). There is a Facebook Fan Page, and you can sign up for their newsletter as well.

There are advantages of going there in person, should you find yourself in, or nearby the Space Coast Region of Florida (note the store is about 60 miles from Walt Disney World). Namely they sell more items in the actual store than online, and they host a large sized traditional cache outside (available only during business hours, or by appointment otherwise).  As of the date of this blog post, GC15RQB, A Cool Cache has been found almost 2,000 times, and has over 500 favorite points on Geocaching.com. This is the OCNA blog though, and we might note that Dale and Barb joined our website less than a week after it was launched in 2010, and cross-listed the cache as A Cool Cache and Store - OU004A, the 74th cache listed on our site. We contacted the owners via their profile on our website, and Dale was nice enough to take the time to conduct an email interview with our blog.

Guest Post: Tips for Geocaching with a Metal Detector

If you happen to live in the Northern Latitudes like our primary Blogger (North 43, to be exact), where the snow flies, admit it, you've considered this before in the winter! Or maybe that elusive "needle in a haystack" ammo can in the woods with hundreds of potential hiding spots, all while under heavy tree cover with a spotty GPS signal. We were approached by Michael Bernzweig, and his brother Daniel Bernzweig, co-owners of Detector Electronics Corp. (found on the web at Metaldetector.com) and asked if we'd be interested in publishing an article that Daniel recently wrote. Absolutely we will! Check out their website of course, for all your personal and commercial metal detecting needs, and be sure to check out the History & Friends page on their site, which gives an excellent history of their family owned business (they are brothers, and the 2nd generation owners), and be sure to check out the Customer Reviews page on the site as well. Note that we've made the text "Metal Detectors are useful in Geocaching" a clickable link to an article by Michael, that is hosted on their website.

Tips for Geocaching With a Metal Detector
    By Daniel Bernzweig

When you’re out geocaching a metal detector can be a great help. Similarly, if you’re looking for new places to go with your metal detector geocaching can be the perfect solution. Basically, geocaching with a metal detector can be a lot of fun and, will make finding most caches easier.

Geocaching of course doesn’t require a metal detector in any way. In fact, most geocachers use only their GPS to find the hidden caches. However, in many situations using a metal detector while geocaching has proved very helpful. For example, in colder climates geocachers can only enjoy their hobby when there’s no snow on the ground, unless they have a metal detector that is! And, when out with the family, using a metal detector can help make finding the caches easier, and will give the kids something interesting to do along the way for added enjoyment.

When choosing which machine will make the best geocaching metal detector, be sure to consider the terrain in the areas you frequent most. There are geocaches hidden all around the United States, and the world in all types of locations. If you want to focus on underwater geocaches for example, you’ll want an underwater metal detector. Other features to consider are the machine’s weight, display (visual or audio), and size. Be sure to read the article entitled “Metal Detectors are Useful in Geocaching" for some great tips on equipment selection.

You’ll also want to be sure to be well prepared for your trip. In addition to your metal detector and your GPS you’ll want to be sure to pack along extra batteries for both, food, water, a first aid kit, a map of the area, and other necessities like these. And, while most geocaches aren’t buried, if you find other treasures along the way, you’ll want some digging tools including a metal detecting shovel and serrated digging knife.

Both Geocaching and Metal Detecting are also hobbies that hold a respect for the land they get to enjoy.  Basically, any participant in either hobby is to leave the place as they found it. Don’t cut trees or otherwise deface the property. If you do dig, use your tools to lift up sod so its easily replaceable and disturb the area as little as possible.

Lastly, both of these hobbies also insist on having a good time! Participants in geocaching and metal detecting are looking for adventure and excitement; and they find both with these hobbies. Don’t take our word for it though, head out to enjoy some geocaching with a metal detector today!

    Biography
About the author: Daniel Bernzweig manages MetalDetector.com in Southborough, MA. He has written on the subject of treasure hunting and metal detecting since the mid 1980’s. He enjoys traveling with his metal detector and helping to educate others in the correct use of metal detectors in their explorations.

    OCNA Pathtag winners announced!

We're a little slow in posting the winners of our Pathtag contest, especially since all three winners responded within 3 1/2 hours of the drawing on Friday night, Septermber 27th, but we're busy, busy, busy at the Blog. We assure you, the fix was not in! Because the Grand Prize winner, of five of our Pathtags was Chaz AKA SFC Chaz (sfcchaz), from Glen Burnie, Maryland. He just happens to be the number 2 cache finder on our website. If we were Geocaching.com, it would be like Bobcam won! The number one cache finder on our site is an Admin, and was ineligible to win. He was required to buy some though.

The 2nd prize winner, of three Pathtags, was Rebecca AKA The Fossillady from Borrego Springs, California. The 3rd prize winner, of two Pathtags was Jenn AKA TheBergstromClan from Aurora, Colorado. Congratulations to all three of them!! Don't worry, we will give away more of our Pathtags in the future, at random. Thanks to all who entered the contest as well.

OpenCaching North America Pathtags have arrived. Win some!

    Pathtag Blueprint
After many false starts the last couple of years, the OpenCaching North America Pathtag, 1st Edition, has finally been manufactured, and is on sale now! They can be purchased in lots of 20 for $20 from TheGeocoinStore.com under a "club fundraiser" program. You'll note the page for our tag on their website references us receiving $5 for every 20 pack sold. However, that applies only to registered non-profit LLC's, one of which we are not (although we have, and still are considering, that legal status), so that $5 is payable only in Pathtag cash. The OCNA team will of course use this Pathtag cash to buy more of our own tags, which we will generously distribute to promote the website.

Author Sara Murray talks with us about GeocacheBooks

As can be seen on the banner above, Author Sara Murray writes children's fiction books set in real parks, and GPS coordinates will lead you to landmarks in the books. Like so many other interviewees on this blog, we first became aware of her when she made herself known in Geocaching social media circles. The blogger made an immediate note of this; future interview subject! We were originally going to wait for the interview until her first full length book came out, but upon seeing (on social media) that she attended the recent Geocaching Block Party as a vendor, we decided a concept and orgin interview was in order now, and another when the first full length book is released. Clicking the banner takes you to her website, and you can follow Geocachebooks on Twitter and Facebook. On with the interview.

An Interview with The Geocaching Doc

    The GCDoc Logo
If you're a regular reader, you've probably noted we threatened to post the weekly content of a YouTube Geocaching Vlogger here as a guest blogger. We are thrilled to announce this Vlogger is none other than Justin, AKA The Geocaching Doc, AKA DrJBroke on Geocaching.com! He is a member of The Geocaching Network YouTube Channel, and is the member of that network with the second most subscribers to his own YouTube Channel. Although he needs no introduction to many Geocachers out there, we would like the introduce The Geocaching Doc (sometimes shortened to The GCDoc) via an interview, which he was nice enough to take the time to do with us. We will embed a couple of his more popular videos into the post to break up the text, and we will back date his very latest video (released late last week) to the day before this blog post, as his first "guest post".
